Wisconsin’s most striking scenery is further north than our route, bordering Lake Superior. The Wisconsin we visited is one of quiet rolling farmland, dotted with beautiful barns and ubiquitous grain silos. It is hard to believe driving through in July, how harsh the winters become.
As we rolled over one gentle green slope the land in front suddenly leveled and a wide valley appeared. It looked so inviting until you perceived the water pockets and flooded areas. We’d reached the Mississippi flood plain. The power of the river to inundate this farm land was clear and evident. Already running wide and sediment laden, yet two thousand miles from the ocean, it is a stark reminder of nature’s power.
