Winona, MN – things are starting to feel ‘west’

Minnesota seems like a milestone state. From the conifer forests of its north, through the deciduous trees of the rolling centre and then prairie grasses in the south west it has been the key transition state to feeling ‘west’. Add crossing the Mississippi and it’s starting to sink in.
Michigan and Wisconsin’s landscapes, although new to us, had a comfortable, familiar feel. Rolling hills and glacier scoured kettle lakes, mixed forests and waterside beaches – admittedly lakes not ocean.
Minnesota is large enough to have really distinct climate and landscape areas and resulting farming and land use.
Most striking image though is of the wind farms. Stretching from horizon to horizon these modern monoliths add the third vertical dimension to the plains.
